Things get even weirder when you take a snapshot of only the gray area, and you can indeed see that it's gray if you don't see the background color.

Yes they are 3 birds, the one in teh middle is a bit oversized though
the final illusion probably would have worked better if, ya know, a bunch of video titlecards didn't show up on the sides
